AAR-HCS maintains and administers a listserv (email discussion list) called HISTOC-L to facilitate communication and discussion among scholars interested in the Section's activities. It is a low-volume list, with relatively few postings. Subscriptions are available to active scholars in the field.
How to subscribe
If you wish to subscribe, please send an email to Nathan Rein (nrein at ursinus dot edu; replace the "at" and "dot" with the appropriate symbols) and include your name, institutional and departmental affiliation, rank if applicable, and area of specialization. You may also use the form at the bottom of the page.
List guidelines
We have established a set of guidelines for HISTOC-L participants (adapted from the RISA-L and ISLAMAAR list rules). These guidelines are intended to maintain a collegial, focused, academic, and professional level of discussion. Participants are asked to familiarize themselves with these guidelines and to abide by them. Consistent violators will be removed from the list.
- Avoid acrimonious messages and ad hominem attacks; no "flaming." (This bears emphasizing, as it's sometimes harder to avoid "flaming" than one might expect. For more, see this article.)
- Keep messages brief and to the point.
- No ranting. Please don't post repeated messages on a single topic unless you are responding to legitimate queries.
- Extended discussions between a small number of individuals should be held off-list.
- Identify yourself when posting. A short "signature" containing your name, institutional affiliation, etc., is often the simplest way to do this.
- Please don't post verbatim copies of other material, such as newspaper articles, especially if it is available online. A summary, accompanied by a link (e.g., "http://www.nytimes.com"), is sufficient.
- When you reply to a list posting, please don't include the original message; delete the parts that are not relevant to your own. Otherwise, messages can get very long, very quickly.
- If you post a bibliographic inquiry, it is considered courteous to assemble the responses into a brief bibliography and to post the resulting citations to the list.
- If possible, try to post messages in "plain text" only, avoiding HTML codes, boldface, italics, special fonts and formatting, etc. Such formatting sometimes produces very odd-looking and hard-to-read characters.
- Remember that any messages sent to the list will be archived, and thus are potentially available to the entire world to read.
- Finally, remember that if you reply to a HISTOC-L posting, your message will go to all subscribers. If you want to send a private note to the sender, change the "To:" address of your message accordingly.
HISTOC-L was created in September 2006 and is hosted by Ursinus College.
